Boca Juniors coach Julio Flacioni will meet the club’s board for this afternoon after he reportedly submitted his official resignation as a result of events that followed last night’s goalless draw with Zamora in Venezuela.
Despite controlling much of the match, Falcioni's first of the Copa Libertadores as Boca coach, his side were unable to break down their hosts, who ‘parked the bus’ from the outset.
Reports in Argentina today claim Falcioni clashed with captain Juan Roma Riquelme during a post-match grilling of his team. The coach has reportedly told club directors he feels he cannot continue to do his job under the current circumstances.
On-loan sriker Dario Cvitanich is reported to have expressed his anger at being substituted in last night’s goalless draw, which some reports suggest was the catalyst for what followed.
Despite leading Boca to their first league title in three years, ending Apertura 2011 undefeated and with the biggest winning margin in the history of the short tournament format, there had been suggestions that a number of players and some board members were unhappy with the coach’s defensive approach - Boca claimed the title with conceding just six goals in their nineteen matches.
Club President Daniel Angelici has since denied reports of his coach’s resignation, but Falcioni refused to do so, telling reporters he had “No comment.”
Falcioni’s assistant, Omar Piccoli, told Olé, “To my knowledge did not resign, we have the day off today and tomorrow we train.”
Riquelme today denied any altercation took place. “Nothing happened here. There are no problems with the coach,” he told a posse of reporters. “I travelled the whole way back from Venezuela drinking maté. We are happy with the coach and he is happy with us.”
Falcioni is expected to meet club president Daniel Angelici later today.
