Uruguay Clausura Week 4: Late Show From El Tanque Sisley Stuns Cerrito

Liverpool made it four wins on the bounce to take top spot in the Clausura on their own this week, while there were first wins of the campaign for Danubio and Racing Club. Defensor Sporting and Peñarol will play their match a week on Thursday; their match this weekend was postponed to allow Defensor a weekend's rest as they prepare for their trip to Mexico to play Chivas on Wednesday. El Tanque Sisley's remarkable match with Cerrito means that Cerrito are almost certain to be relegated, while Rentistas are also deep in the mire. The Uruguayan relegation system works on a table of total points collected over two seasons, with the bottom three teams relegated. For promoted teams, points collected in their first season are doubled.

Racing Club opened the weekend's action by picking up a much-needed win against Nacional as they battle to avoid the drop. Although Nacional's Facundo Piriz was sent off with 45 minutes still to play, Racing couldn't break the deadlock until Anibal Hernández converted a penalty on 70 minutes for the game's only goal. Cerro cruised to a 3-0 win against Rentistas, though it took a spectacular effort from OJ Morales on the stroke of half time to give the hosts the lead. César Falletti doubled the lead just after the break with a superb free kick before Gonzalo Mastriani showed a striker's instinct to notch the game's third goal with 15 minutes remaining and put the game beyond Rentistas.

El Tanque Sisley left it late to beat Cerrito 3-2 in an incredible finale. Francisco Molina put the visitors ahead with a fine finish five minutes before half time, somewhat against the run of play, and when Rodrigo Huerta doubled the lead on 80 minutes it seemed as though there was no way back for El Tanque, who had been struggling to break through a resolute defence all game. Substitute Gonzalo Pizzichillo found a way through after 89 minutes though, and a minute later El Tanque were level through Miguel Murillo's close range finish. Two minutes into injury time, Gonzalo Curbelo (another substitue) completed the turn-around with a powerful header as Cerrito utterly imploded with Alexis Da Silva's red card. The result means that Cerrito are now 28 points from safety (though this effectively is 14 points as their points are doubled as a promoted side), and relegation looks a near certainty.

Liverpool also came from behind to beat Bella Vista, who took the lead after 20 minutes through José Varela. Despite creating chances, with the impressive Ignacio Nicolini at the heart of many moves, Bella Vista couldn't extend their lead and were made to pay after the break when Pablo Pereira was left free at the back post to equalise on the hour. Four minutes later Liverpool went in front; Marcelo Mancilla's cross was perfectly placed for Hernán Figueredo to head past the keeper for his first goal of the Clausura. River Plate shared four goals with Wanderers; despite going ahead twice through Cristian González and Janderson, River Plate were unable to hold onto their lead on either occasion as Sergio Rodríguez and Richard Mercado hit back for the visitors.

Cerro Largo picked up a 2-0 win against Fénix with goals from Raul Echandía and Matías Tellechea before Danubio picked up their first win of the Clausura with a 3-2 victory over Rampla Juniors. Sebastián Fernández scored a brace, the first of which from an impossible angle, before Richard Núñez pulled one back for Rampla Juniors, but with 13 minutes left Rodrigo Canosa was sent off for the visitors and Cristian Yeladián scored from the penalty spot to restore the two goal lead. Hugo Souza was also shown a red card as Rampla were reduced to nine men late on, and Danubio held on for the win despite Ismael Espiga's goal in injury time.
