Vasco da Gama advanced to the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana after hammering Bolivian side Aurora 8-3 in the second leg of their tie. The Brazilian club lost 3-1 away from home but it took them just 45 minutes to level things up in Rio de Janiero. Bernardo, who had already missed a routine chance, gave Vasco the lead in the fifth minute and although Augusto Andaveris equalised on the break, Vasco went on to dominate, especially after Aurora's Gonzalo Galindo received his second yellow card for a foul in the 35th minute. Alecsandro scored from the resulting Juninho free-kick and the same combination helped Vasco open up a 3-1 lead before the break. The second half saw Leandro and Juninho extend Vasco's lead before Diomedes Pena scored from the spot to make it 5-2 on the night and 6-5 on aggregate. However, Vasco bagged two more goals through Bernardo and Douglas to ensure victory and Louriero Allan netted the eighth after Ronald Segovia scored for the Bolivian side.
Libertad overturned a one-goal deficit from the first leg as they beat Sao Paulo 2-0 in Paraguay to advance to the last eight. Sergio Aquino scored a first half penalty to level the scores and Ariel Nunez won it for Libertad with 20 minutes remaining.
Another Brazilian side, Flamengo, were dumped out of the competition in the last 16 stage, going out 5-0 on aggregate to Universidad de Chile. Flamengo were looking to overturn a 4-0 deficit from the first leg but conceded again to Marcelo Diaz in the 22nd minute. In the other last 16 match this week, Santa Fe beat Botafogo 4-1 to advance to the quarter-finals.
The quarter-final first legs will all be played on Tuesday, November 1, with Velez Sarsfield hosting Santa Fe, Libertad travelling to LDU Quito, Arsenal going to Universidad de Chile and Peruvian side Universitario entertaining Vasco da Gama.
